This little pin-pillow is the first of my Special Projects – a new series of small projects that also provide a chance to learn something new or discover new fibres or materials. These Special Projects are only available in my Etsy store and will come out a couple of times a year, along with full kits or threadpacks. They are a chance for me to provide you with some new creative experiences, at a better price than I could if sold through stores.
As the first in this series, “My bird” is a gentle start – a small stitch based on an antique fragment from my collection.

The antique was stitched in wool on Bristol Board, and it came to me in broken, wonky frame, backed by some silk ribbon. I loved this little bird – so proudly claimed by the stitcher – and I loved the effect of the striped and variegated silk ribbon. To echo that, I decided to stitch it in sumptuous Cascade House Embroidery Silks and use Satin Stitch suggest the ribbon rows.
I know some people can be intimidated by Satin Stitch, so I’ve included in the chart some special instructions and tips for stitching this versatile and beautifully textural stitch. With just a little practice, you’ll soon get the hang of it, and then seek out ways to add some more Satin to your stitching.
The pattern comes in hard-copy and PDF (both in full colour), with instructions on Satin Stitching and finishing tips, including how I used the pattern of the finishing material and leftover silks in some freeform embroidery on the back. And there is a DMC conversion, of course. You can find it at my Etsy store.
I also have a limited number of full kits that include:
- full colour hard-copy chart
- a 6 x 9.5 inch piece of 36-count hand-dyed “Bush Tea” linen by JaysXStitch
- a 4.5 x 7 inch piece of cotton voile for finishing
- precut Cascade House Embroidery Silks threadpack
- feather charm and safety pin (used for finishing).
I have limited numbers of kits that include the 36-count linen; after these sell out, there will be kits available with everything else. There are also hard-copy chart and silk threadpack only options available too.
This makes a lovely gift – whether as a finished piece or gifted as a chart/kit; and for a limited time, all sales will come with a free exclusive postcard (until stocks last), perfect for your gift-giving.
I hope you enjoy creating or giving your own little bird, and do let me know your experiences with Satin Stitch – I hope that this increases your confidence and you can enjoy the beauty that the silks bring.
